Between 1989 and 1993, the NA Miata only came with a 1.6-liter 116-hp inline-four motor, but in late 1993, the powertrain's displacement grew to 1.8-liter and its power to 130 hp. The 1.6-liter engine allowed the NA Miata to reach 60 mph from a dig in around 9 seconds, and the 1.8-liter did the same task just about half a second quicker.

Moxnix, yes, a factory hardtop would be enough to make the car eligible to run in spite of being a 2 seater. In reply to Don49: Thanks for the tip - I can defintely go further than a Spec Miata; figures an SM would jsut be a good reliable base to start with.
The miata never was a fast car, and while its damn fun with 200+hp…something can be said about it at only slightly above stock power. And those ITBs made such an orgasmic noise. Turbos a wayyyy better bang for buck upgrade as far as go fast bits..but I would say ITBs make for a equally fun miata.
The first generation of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, the NA Miata, was produced from 1990 to 1997. It largely remained the same during the model’s initial generation, with a classic design sporting distinctive pop-up headlights. However, engine displacement was increased from 1.6 liters to 1.8 liters, and various special editions were released over

We started some 1.6 dyno development last week (224x Dynojet, SAE correction) and have yet to break 100 ft-lbs, including a car with a
K&N makes a reusable air filter for the Miata that some vendors claim can improve your engine performance by as much as 2hp. In any case, investing in the reusable filter is probably cheaper for you in the long run than buying paper filters. This filter is the same for all Miatas (1.6 and 1.8L engines through 1995).
Engine changes consist of retarded timing, retarded exhaust cam, and a .4 reduction in compression ratio.Mazda claims about 10 less horsepower for the auto engine. Still, the swap is fairly simple, not that much harder than a clutch swap. The Parts. To do this swap, you'll need a few parts: clutch disk. flywheel.
In a naturally-aspirated state (without a turbocharger) the Miata’s inline-four runs optimally with a 2.25” diameter exhaust installed. A larger diameter exhaust won’t necessarily hurt performance (unless you go for 2.5″ or more in diameter), but you won’t see a boost in horsepower or torque with anything larger.
